Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon is a haven for trail runners looking to experience the lake shore; this trail system does not allow mountain biking. In season you will need a state park pass which you can purchase at the gate. The park and trails can be accessed from the Pontaluna Rd by following the signs to the park. Once you enter the park you will continue straight until you reach the turn around at the very end where you will park.. This nature trail offers a lot of beautiful scenery, views of lake Michigan, and plenty of elevation.

The Inside Loop:
- There are porta potties in the parking lot right near the trail entrance.
Hoffmaster Main Loop CW (7.0 miles, ~577ft elevation gain)
This loop begins from the state park parking lot where you will run the main loop clockwise (CW) . From the parking lot you will head to the right of the pavilion and stay right when entering the trail system. As you come around the trail you will want to stay left to avoid following the trail that goes up hill.
Route Details:
- 0.2 mi: Stay left at the fork, don’t take the trail up hill
- 1.3 mi: Left at the fork here.
- 3.1 mi: Run to the right of the dog field, turning at the end towards the parking lot
- 3.3 mi: Turn right towards the bathrooms and run through the parking lot
- 3.4 mi: Enter the trail system towards the end of the parking lot
- 5.9 mi: Left at the fork here.
- 6.8 mi: Left at the fork here.
Hoffmaster Main Loop CCW (7.0 miles, ~577ft elevation gain)
This loop begins from the state park parking lot where you will run the main loop counter clockwise (CCW) . From the parking lot you will head to the right of the pavilion and stay right when entering the trail system. As you come around the trail you will want to stay right taking the trail that goes up hill.
Route Details:
- 0.2 mi: Stay left at the fork
- 1.3 mi: Right at the fork here.
- 3.8 mi: Exit the trail system running across the parking lot towards the bathrooms
- 3.9 mi: Turn right at the bathrooms and run across the parking lot
- 4.0 mi: Turn right to run along the side of the dog field and enter the trail system
- 4.3 mi: Turn right at the fork.
- 6.8 mi: Right at the fork here.
Hoffmaster Big Loop (7.5 miles, ~846ft elevation gain)
This loop begins from the state park parking lot where you will run the big loop . From the parking lot you will head to the right of the pavilion and stay right when entering the trail system. As you come around the trail you will want to stay right taking the trail that goes up hill.
